Cravity Came, Saw, and Conquered This Song

Hello, k-dreamers! With life getting hectic, it seems like all of the days are blending together in a blur. I think “Veni Vidi Vici” by Cravity really captures that hazy feeling. Let’s take a look at this song, shall we?

Step on the gas pedal and fly through the sky.

I think what makes this song feel hazy is the chord progression mixing the major and minor chords. Even though most chord progressions have major and minor chords, those chords are usually all in the same key. “Veni Vidi Vici” uses a chord outside of the key of B♭ Minor. There is a clash between a B♭ minor chord and a B♭ major chord. This is called using a parallel key, or modal mixture. Even though both scales start with B♭, they contain different notes, causing them to clash. This may confuse listeners as to whether this song sounds bright or dark.

Honestly, this ambiguity is what made me unsure of whether I liked this song or not. But the combined instrumentation and the use of parallel keys was too cool not to like it. If this hazy effect is what Cravity is going for, then “Veni Vidi Vici” did its job.

Cravity conquered my ears with these fun little details!

That trumpet intro was epic. You can tell that the brass was real. It’s pretty cool that the melody of the trumpet continues into the verse and the instrumental break instead of it just making a one-time appearance. I thought that the drum kit and electric guitar during the break was a bit random, but I suppose it adds to the epicness of the song.

“Veni Vidi Vici” starts off in half-time, only emphasizing every other beat. Then as the pre-chorus arrives, they start subdividing the beat to build into a drop. There’s something about the beat going from half-time to emphasizing every beat that I think sounds so cool. It kinda reminds me of “Remember” by 9muses. In that song, they also start in half-time and right before the chorus, they start subdividing every beat. It really builds energy in a short amount of time. Of course, in Cravity’s song, it’s more gradual.

There’s something about Cravity songs that make me feel like I’m speeding down a highway (not that I know how to drive). “Veni Vidi Vici” is the first Cravity song I’ve added to my playlist. Were you impressed with this song? Let me know in the comments!
