ESC 2022: Do You Believe In True Love?

  • “Lock Me In” by Circus Mircus (Georgia)
  • “Disko” by LPS (Slovenia)
  • “Guilty Pleasure” by Mia Dimšić (Croatia)
  • “Stripper” by Achille Lauro (San Marino)
  • “Llámame” by WRS (Romania)

Lock Me In – Circus Mircus

Georgia is another country that has caused quite a bit of buzz. The lyrics are almost unintelligible, so can I assume that they aren’t important for the overall vibe of the song? “Lock Me In” at best is cool background music to me. I enjoyed listening to the synths and the guitar, but I’m not personally attached to the song, you know? It sounds like a song you would play during a sped-up montage video. But I mean that in the best possible way.

Disko – LPS

This song has a nice groove to it. After all, it is a disco song named “Disko.” That slow section is killer. I love it! I wonder how if they’ll do anything special to emphasize it in the performance. Besides the slow part, the energy of the song is rather consistent, but it’s at a tempo that is lively enough to not lose people. I honestly don’t know how well LPS will do. At the end of the day, I can’t say I dislike this song.

Guilty Pleasure – Mia Dimšić

This song is pretty cute. I personally like the line “Would you run away?” as a key lyric in the song. It drives the message home while also putting the listener in Mia Dimšić’s shoes. While I don’t endorse infidelity, I think “Guilty Pleasure” has this sweet, endearing quality. However, it tips a little too far in the “corny” category. Croatia’s entry is a guilty pleasure in itself.

Stripper – Achille Lauro

Am I wrong or is this song about cross-dressing? I know I can be a bit of a prude but I won’t judge. Achille Lauro might be able to charm his way to the finals with his stage presence. But, if I’m being honest, I’m not a fan of his voice. San Marino have set themselves up to be compared to last year’s winners, but I still think Måneskin come out on top. As a whole, “Stripper” doesn’t do much for me.

Llámame – WRS

Not gonna lie, the Spanish in “Llámame” was giving me “El Diablo” vibes, but thankfully they didn’t go too overboard with it. The one thing that bothers me about Romania’s entry is the way WRS sings. It sounds like his voice is cracking. While it’s possible to pull off this singing style, in this case it hindered my enjoyment of the song. In fact, I wasn’t even sure if I would like “Llámame” until the dance break happened. Boy do I love that dance break! I honestly think the dancing alone is enough to put him through to the finals. But I guess we’ll see…

Who has my vote (for now)?

It was WRS that got me the most excited out of these five. “Llámame” is not perfect, but it promises a good time. After reviewing every Eurovision entry, I will say that the songs aren’t as star-studded as last year’s line-up. That still doesn’t mean I won’t hype up every performance, even the ones I might have been a bit harsh about. After all, the song is only the half of it. You also need the performance to sell it. Well, that’s it from me folks! See you next year!
