Guess who’s back, k-dreamers? If you guessed Jinho of Pentagon, you would be correct (and if you guessed me, I’m flattered). Pentagon have returned with a banger of a song, “Feelin’ Like.” To say this song is funky is an understatement. Not to mention that those lyrics mildly flustered me. But let’s talk about all of the moving pieces within the instrumental, shall we?
Pentagon are the coolest cats in 2022 so far.
At the root of “Feelin’ Like” is a simple rhythm of a bass guitar. There isn’t much instrumentation during the verses, but once we get to the pre-chorus, vocal harmonies fill out the sound and a slap bass is added. Not only does this distinguish the sections from each other, it also gives a song a sense of development and progression. Then of course the funky hook introduced at the beginning comes back in the chorus.
What completely took me by surprise was the complete switch in instrumentation during the bridge. To give more emphasis to Yuto’s rap verse, the bass rhythm is replaced by a metallic clang and squeak reminiscent of the end of their song “Cerberus” from last year. This section sounds nothing like the rest of the song. So how do Pentagon transition back? In order to navigate back home, the hook fades back in and transitions to some hi-hats before finally returning with the bass rhythm. This switch in instrumentation is refreshing while still being subtle.
Will this be the catchiest hook of the year?
I totally wanted to check out Pentagon’s comeback after hearing the hook. I think it’s the staccato of the notes that sounds so appealing to my ears.
