TWICE Know What Is Love And It Ain’t A Science

At long last, k-dreamers! It only took 3 years, but we finally know what is love! In their 2018 release, they made love sound like such a beautiful thing. But what happens when you try too hard to keep someone’s love? You get the song “Scientist”. Let’s take a look at TWICE’s most recent comeback.

The message of “Scientist” is strengthened by its lyrics.

TWICE sing about someone who is too fixated on insignificant details to approach them. They choose some inventive ways to set this person straight. Chaeyoung’s rap verse is one of my favourite parts of the lyrics:

Rather than Mr. Know-all Genius Einstein
More like a bulldozer Curious Frankenstein
Charge forward, clumsy yet fascinating
Straight away, push hard Rush
Got a crush on me

A relationship doesn’t need to be perfect. Just go for it and you’ll figure things out as you go. That verse and Jeongyeon’s line “Let our love be like having a screw loose” really summarize the message of the song. This is all to say that I really like the bridge of “Scientist”.

TWICE really deliver the sass in this song.

Do you ever find yourself singing “Love ain’t a science uhm-uhm, need no license uhm-uhm”? TWICE really amp up the attitude near the end of the song. So much so that I was worried that I liked the last third better than the rest of the song. But there are a few gems sprinkled throughout “Scientist”, like Mina’s line in the second verse. I like the way she says “So what did you learn about me so far?” Her low register and the insinuation of “you know… you could have been going out with me if you hadn’t been so busy gathering information about me…” is another highlight of this song. I’ll definitely be listening to this song over and over until the end of the year.

Honourable Mentions: 10cm – Yesterday You Left Me; T-ARA – TIKI TAKA, Younha – Stardust (That change in metre in “TIKI TAKA” is really cool!)

If you like this song, check out: K.B.S – Question (2018), GFriend – Fever (2019), ELRIS – Jackpot (2020)

I really enjoyed “Scientist” but I haven’t checked out the rest TWICE’s new album. Apparently the B-Sides are even more impressive. What did you think of their new comeback? Let me know in the comments!
